Guest Speaker, Doug Baumoel, MBA, Founder, Continuity Family Business Consulting

Doug Baumoel brings extensive experience in family business operations and executive management to his work with Continuity clients. He served as a second-generation leader of his own family's business, as chief executive in non-family enterprises, and in management of an outside family business. He has launched businesses in both the US and Europe, where he resides for several years establishing the European offices of his own family's buisness.

Doug has addressed a wide range of business challenges as a consultant to enterprising families, and writes and speaks widely on many family business topics including managing conflict, entrepreneurial leadership, governance, and succession planning.

Doug earned a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Cornell University, an MBA from the Wharton School of Business, and certificates in both family business advising and family wealth advising from the Family Firm Institute. He served as president of the New England Chapter of the Family Firm Institute from 2008-2011.

June 8 - Doug will be speaking about the Entrepreneurial Matrix at the FFI/NEC Chapter Breakfast

Among the most important factors impacting the success of family businesses through the generations is the degree of entrepreneurial behavior evidenced in succeeding generations. Entrepreneurship in family business has been a much researched topic in recent years, but just what is entrepreneurial behavior? How do we know it when we see it? How do we measure it? How do we teach it?

The presentation will describe a model, the Entrepreneurial Matrix, created to coach the next generation leaders in developing successful entrepreneurial behaviors. The model identifies Eight critical characterisitics that business leaders must have in order to continue the etrepreneurial legacy on which the business was founded.

NACD Director of the Year Awards 5-17-11

Representing the Family Firm Institute as President of the New England Chapter, Doug will be attending the National Association of Corporate Directors 2011 Director of the Year Awards Dinner at the Boston Copley this evening. FFI was a member of the advisory council for the the selection of the honorees.


Entrepreneurship @ Cornell University - Panel on Family Business Entrepreneurship.

Doug was a last-minute panel member participant at the 2011 Entrepreneurship@Cornell annual celebration in Ithaca on April 15. The panel discussed the particular challenges and opportunities that exist at family owned and managed firms regarding Entrepreneurship.


The Boston Club - Panel Member on April 26

Doug participated on the "Get on Board! Opportunities on Private Company Boards" panel for The Boston Club on April 26. This program introduced potential board candiates to the kinds of opportunities that may be available to them in the non public - sector, explore what privately-held companies are looking for in directors, assist candidates in assessing their own suitability for such boards, and provide useful information about how best to go about seeking those position. Doug spoke on the particular challenges and opportunities which exist for board members at a family owned firm.

The Boston Club is an influential community advancing women leaders, offering connection, access and professional development.

Family Enterprises - What Wharton Didn't Teach

Doug gave a presentation on March 30, 2011 to the Wharton Club of Boston on Family Enterprises. He provided an overview of the latest thinking in family business systems as well as tales from the trenches of family business conflict and practical ideas of how to succeed in a family business. In addition, issues of shared family wealth was discussed. This was a closed event.


Creating Next Gen Family Business Entrepreneurs - an XPX Summit TED

Doug will present a coaching model designed to gage and improve entrepreneurial behavior in next generation family business leaders.
